Aggregation Of Marginal Gains 📈

October 18th 2023

Hey friends,

I am sure that at some point, you all stumbled across „Atomic Habits“ by James Clear. In the world of productivity books, it is held at high esteem and as far as I am concerned, well deserved.

Snippet 🗞

Atomic Habits is a self-improvement book, serving as a guide on how even the tiniest changes have the ability to accumulate into newly gained discipline and automated behaviours (habits).

The Importance Of Showing Up ⛔️

While studying for the medicine entry exam, I found it really hard to commit to studying for several hours each day. That’s why I was trying out tons of different strategies on how to make my habits stick and committing to them. It wasn’t until I read the ideas of James Clear, when I realized that it is crucial to simply show up. It does not matter whether you perform well or not. Just because you showed up, you get your win.

How It Helped Me 🛟

With this thought in mind, it made everything easier. I said that it doesn’t matter if I was studying for 5 hours a day or 30minutes, if only I showed up. So I did. Each day without a fail. Until at some point, where I found myself studying for at least 6 hours a day without any issues. This is what the aggregation of marginal gains is about. Starting with babysteps and improving more and more over time. If you want to find out more about Atomic Habits, feel free to read my in-depth summary here.

Quote Of The Week 🗯

"Success is the product of daily habits—not once-in-a-lifetime transformations."
